This year, Delray Beach will honor the life of the Harriet Tubman, one if the most fascinating and inspiring figures in African-American history. The month-long celebration will include community programs and activities in collaboration with the KOP Mentoring Network, Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, The Delray Beach Historical Society, the School District of Palm Beach County, St. Paul's Episcopal Church and St. Mathew's Episcopal Church.

Palm Beach County Fifth-grade Class Reading & Art Project

When: February 3, All Day

Where: Palm Beach County Schools

Fifth-grade classes in Delray Beach will receive a copy of the featured book "Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom." Recipient of the Caldecott Honor Book, and the Coretta Scott King Medal and Honor.

Author, Carole Boston Weatherford, and illustrator, Kadir Nelson, bring to life Harriet's journey with lyrical text and powerful, expressive illustrations.

In collaboration with the School District's Office of African, African-American, Holocaust, Latino, and Gender Studies, the office will encourage classrooms to read the book and create juried essays or posters that depict how students were inspired by the story. 

"Moses" Book Reading by Local Storytellers

When: February 15, at 10 AM

Where: St. Paul's Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 188 S. Swinton Ave. Delray Beach

There will be a special reading of "Moses: When Harriet Tubma Led Her People to Freedom." Age 9 - adult. This free event is hosted by St. Paul's Episcopal Church, St. Mathew's Episcopal Church, Spady Cultural Heritage Museum and The Delray Beach Historical Society. RSVP required. (561) 274-9578.

Stage Production: "The Escape! The Underground Railroad"

When: February 23, at 6 PM

Where: Plumosa School of The Arts Auditorium, 2501 Seacrest Boulevard, Delray Beach

This event is presented by Miami's Dedications Dance Company. Uniting dance music and dramatic interpretation, this lively performance tells the story of Harriet Tubman and her efforts to liberate hundreds of people from slavery. $10. Please call (561) 665-0151

Outdoor Instructional "Freedom" Painting

When: February 29, at 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Where: Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, 970 NW 5th Avenue, Delray Beach

Gather on the lawn at Spady Cultural Heritage Museum for an outdoor, instructional freedom painting session with nationally acclaimed Haitian artist, Katiana Jarbath. Express your inner hero based on the Harriet Tubman story. $10. RSVP (561) 279-8833. Supplies included.
