Improper fertilizer use contributes to nutrient pollution, harming aquatic ecosystems and increasing flood risks.

Best practices:

  • Apply fertilizer based on soil test results.
  • Use slow-release or organic fertilizers.
  • Avoid fertilizing before rain or during the summer blackout period (June 1–Sept 30).
  • Sweep excess fertilizer off hard surfaces back onto the lawn.

Alternatives:

  • Compost, bone meal, and coffee grounds.
  • Native landscaping that requires less fertilization.

Why it matters:

  • Excess nutrients fuel algae blooms in Lake Ida and the Intracoastal Waterway.
  • Clean waterways support recreation, tourism, and wildlife.
