Delray Beach is a vibrant coastal city with unique challenges related to stormwater runoff, flooding, and sea level rise. Our Public Works Department is committed to protecting our community through education, infrastructure improvements, and sustainable practices. This page helps residents understand how they can contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Delray Beach.

 Storm Protection & Flood Resilience

Delray Beach is investing in stormwater infrastructure to protect against flooding and sea level rise.

City projects:

  • $378M in capital improvements planned over 30 years.
  • Upgrading seawalls, pump stations, and drainage systems.
  • Installing green infrastructure like bioswales and rain gardens.

Resident actions:

  • Elevate utilities and install flood vents.
  • Use native plants and permeable surfaces.
  • Participate in community workshops and cleanups.

Planning for the future:

  • Stormwater Master Plan updated every 5 years.
  • Vulnerability analysis guides infrastructure upgrades.

Base Floor Elevation & Elevation Certificates

Your lowest floor elevation affects your flood insurance rate and building compliance.

Elevation Certificates:

  • Document your home’s elevation relative to the BFE.
  • Required for homes in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs).
  • Can support a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) to remove your property from the flood zone.

Tips:

  • Hire a licensed surveyor to complete the certificate.
  • Store it with your insurance documents.
  • Use it to compare flood insurance quotes.
