After a hurricane, many repairs and rebuilding efforts require permits to ensure safety and compliance with building codes.  Before beginning repairs, check which projects require permits, such as structural work, electrical service restoration, or roofing, and submit applications through the City’s Building Division. Following these steps protects property owners, speeds recovery, and ensures that rebuilding meets safety standards.

Roof Repair Guidance  

Before a Hurricane 

  • Have your roof professionally inspected for loose shingles, cracked tiles, damaged flashing, and signs of leaks

  • Trim trees and remove branches that could fall on the roof during high winds

  • Clean gutters and roof drains to prevent water backup  

  • Secure or replace loose soffits, fascia, and roof vents  

  • Consider wind-mitigation improvements such as roof-to-wall hurricane straps or clips and a sealed roof deck, which may also qualify for insurance discounts  


After a Hurricane

  • Stay Safe First

  • Do not climb onto a damaged roof

  • Watch for downed power lines and structural hazards


Document Damage

  • Take photos and videos of all roof damage before making repairs

  • Photograph interior water damage as well

  • Contact your insurance company as soon as possible


Prevent Further Damage

  • Arrange for emergency tarping or temporary repairs to stop water intrusion 

  • Keep receipts for emergency repairs; insurance may reimburse reasonable mitigation expenses
