The City of Delray Beach is introducing a new Civil Citation Program to encourage compliance with city ordinances and maintain the quality of life for all residents and visitors. Beginning October 1, 2024, the program will offer a warning period for minor offenses, with formal citations starting November 1, 2024.
A civil citation is a non-criminal notice issued for minor violations of local ordinances, such as littering, noise disturbances, dogs on the beach, excessive noise, or improper trash disposal. Unlike criminal charges, civil citations typically result in fines rather than arrests or criminal records. The goal is to encourage compliance with community regulations and promote responsible behavior through education and enforcement, without overburdening the judicial system.
"Our goal is to educate the public and provide an opportunity to correct behavior before issuing fines," said Terrence Moore, Delray Beach City Manager. "We believe this program will help us maintain a clean, safe, and enjoyable environment for everyone."
Throughout October, city officials will issue warnings for any infractions, giving the community time to familiarize themselves with the new regulations. However, starting November 1, 2024, formal civil citations will be issued for repeat or unaddressed violations, with fines assessed as appropriate.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to review the city’s regulations to avoid unnecessary citations. Information can be found on the City of Delray Beach website at: www.delraybeachfl.gov/citations.
The Civil Citation Program reflects Delray Beach's ongoing commitment to promoting community responsibility and preserving the beauty of our city.
