NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ADVISORY TROPICAL STORM DORIAN
5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019
In an effort to help Delray Beach residents prepare their homes for Hurricane Dorian, the city of Delray Beach is setting up three drive-through distribution centers where residents can collect sand bags and tarps. The distribution sites will open at 8 a.m. Friday and will stay open while supplies last. Staff from the Delray Beach Parks & Recreation Department, The Delray Beach Police Department, Delray Beach Fire Rescue and Delray Beach Public Works will be handing out up to eight sand bags and one tarp per vehicle at the following locations:
- The Delray Beach Golf Course, 2200 Highland Ave, Delray Beach
- Pompey Park, 1101 N.W. 2 St., Delray Beach
- Anchor Park, 340 South Ocean Blvd., Delray Beach
This event is for Delray Beach residents only. Identification will be required.
The City of Delray Beach is closely monitoring the path, size and intensity of Hurricane Dorian. According to the National Weather Service, Dorian has strengthened and may make landfall as a Category 3 or 4 storm somewhere along the east coast of Florida. While it’s unclear exactly how it will affect Delray Beach, we must prepare for high winds, rain and flooding.
Compounding the storm’s potential threat, Delray Beach is also experiencing King Tides, during which water levels are higher than normal, that will remain through Hurricane Dorian. We can expect flooding in coastal or low-lying areas of our city. Residents should take measures to protect their property and avoid driving in or walking through standing water. Don’t Drown, Turn Around!
City staff are prepared for any eventuality. Necessary resources have been purchased. Generators and lift stations have been inspected, and everything is in proper, working order. Residents are urged to complete their storm preparations on their homes by Friday afternoon. Visit www.readypbc.com for information about evacuations zones, emergency preparations and shelters.
Now is a good time for Delray Beach residents to sign up for the city’s Code Red emergency notification system. For more information and to sign up, click here:
