DELRAY BEACH COMMISSION SELECTS NEW CITY MANAGER

Post Date:08/22/2019 8:21 AM

During the August 20th City Commission meeting, commissioners chose Michael Cernech, a highly regarded public administration professional with more than two decades of experience in city government, as Delray Beach’s new city manager.

At the meeting, Cernech spoke about his management style, his devotion to his work and the goals he plans to set moving forward. “People have to know and understand how committed I’m going to be to the organization — that I’ll be here for the long haul and that I’m going to invest every bit of myself,” he told the city commission before the decision.

Cernech is currently the city manager of Tamarac, a position he has held for nearly eight years, having previously worked as the city’s deputy city manager for nine years. During his tenure with Tamarac, he served as the Interim Director of Financial Services, the Interim Director of Public Works, as well as the Interim Director of Community Development. Prior to serving in Tamarac, Cernech was the city manager of Shavano Park, Texas for four years.

Cernech earned a Master of Public Administration from Trinity University and a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Detroit Mercy. He also attended the Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Cernech sits on the Florida City and County Management Association (FCCMA) Board of Directors for District 5 as the organization’s appointed secretary/treasurer. He also served three terms as secretary/treasurer of the Broward City County Managers’ Association (BCCMA).

In 2012, The International City Management Association (ICMA) recognized Cernech as a ICMA Credentialed Manager (ICMA-CM) and honored him for 20 years of service.
