The City of Delray Beach is reminding residents and visitors that Florida law prohibits stopping, standing, or parking a vehicle on a sidewalk, including where a sidewalk crosses a driveway.
Keeping sidewalks clear is an important public safety and accessibility issue. A vehicle blocking even part of a sidewalk can prevent pedestrians from passing safely and may force them to enter the roadway to get around the obstruction. This can create a particularly dangerous situation for children, seniors and people with mobility challenges who may have limited ability to navigate around a blocked sidewalk.
Unobstructed sidewalks also support compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility requirements and helps ensure that people of all abilities can travel independently and safely.
To give the community time to become familiar with the requirement, the City will conduct a warning period from August 31 through September 30, 2026.
Beginning October 1, 2026, enforcement will begin. Vehicles found blocking or obstructing sidewalks will be subject to a $250 fine issued to the vehicle’s owner.
Residents are encouraged to make sure vehicles are parked completely within driveways or other legally permitted parking areas without extending across any portion of the sidewalk.
“Keeping our sidewalks clear is about more than parking compliance. It’s about making sure everyone in our community can travel safely and independently,” said Delray Beach Police Chief Darrell Hunter.
The City encourages residents to share this information with family members, neighbors and visitors to help ensure Delray Beach sidewalks remain safe and accessible for everyone.
