The City of Delray Beach will mark a once-in-a-generation moment in American history by opening a historic time capsule during the City’s July 4th Celebration in 2026, as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence. Residents and visitors are invited to attend this historic occasion and take part in celebrating both America’s 250th birthday and Delray Beach’s enduring legacy.

Sealed 50 years ago, the Delray Beach time capsule offers a unique snapshot of the city’s past — preserving memories, messages, and artifacts from a previous generation for today’s community to rediscover. The ceremonial opening will take place on July 4, 2026, at 5 PM, uniting Delray Beach’s history with the nation’s Semi-quincentennial (America 250) celebration.

“This moment allows us to reflect on where we’ve been as a city, honor those who came before us, and celebrate how Delray Beach has grown alongside our nation,” said Delray Beach Mayor Tom Carney. “Opening the time capsule on America’s 250th birthday makes this event especially meaningful.”

The time capsule opening will be part of Delray Beach’s larger Independence Day festivities and will include:

• A brief historical reflection
• A ceremonial opening of the capsule
• The unveiling and reading of select contents
• Community remarks recognizing Delray Beach’s past, present, and future

Following the event, select time capsule items may be displayed for public viewing at the Delray Beach Historical Society.
