Delray Beach Man Arrested After Firing at Officers Serving Arrest Warrant
Delray Beach, FL – This morning, the Delray Beach Police Department SWAT Team responded to the 4200-block of Palm Forest Drive South to serve an arrest warrant, search warrant, and DNA warrant at the home of Evan Berkowitz.
Berkowitz, 56, barricaded himself inside the home. The SWAT Team established a secure perimeter and attempted to negotiate with Berkowitz, who later fired multiple gunshots from inside the residence intermittingly throughout the standoff in the direction of officers on scene.
This afternoon, in an effort to bring the standoff to a safe resolution, The SWAT Team used a tactical vehicle to breach the residence. During this operation, Berkowitz fired additional rounds at the tactical vehicle before eventually surrendering and being placed under arrest. Fortunately, no officers, residents, or members of the public were injured during this incident.
“Despite being fired upon, our officers showed tremendous restraint, and discipline before safely taking the subject into custody,” said Delray Beach Police Chief Darrell Hunter. “Their actions reflect the training, composure, and courage required to resolve a dangerous situation while protecting lives.”
Berkowitz is charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding and reckless driving from an attempted traffic stop last week and will face additional charges stemming from today’s incident. The Delray Beach Police Department also thanks the Boca Raton Police Department, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, and Boynton Beach Police Department for their assistance during this incident.
